Jakande’s Son Recounts His Father’s Last Moments

Deji Jakande, son of the late veteran journalist and politician, Alhaji Lateef Jakande has recounted the last moments of his father.

Deji, a former House of Representatives member, said his father showed no sign of illness in the last 24 hours.

In fact, Jakande, fondly called Baba Kekere by admirers, revalidated his membership of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on Wednesday.

Deji said, “We thank God for his life. He was not sick. He took his pap and crayfish yesterday. He was still reading his newspapers without glasses.

“We had stopped visitors from going to him because of COVID-19 because he likes shaking people. Today (yesterday), he was about to take his breakfast. Suddenly, he couldn’t breathe again. We called the doctor to come and examine him. That was between 10.30 am and 11.am.

“Many people have been calling. The Governor, the deputy governor, the party chairman had called.

“He will be buried tomorrow after Jumat Service before 4pm at the Vaults and Gardens, Ikoyi.”

Jakande was elected Governor in 1979 on the platform of the defunct Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) led by the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

He was re-elected in 1983 general elections.

He also served as Minister of Works and Housing under the Abacha regime.

He died at age 91.

EndSars2021 No going back: Organiser list reasons for fresh Lekki tollgate protest

‘EndSARS Season 2; Why we will #OccupyLekkiTollGate on Saturday – Campaigners’.

According to the statement, the cause of the planned protest is beyond the ruling of the Lagos State Judicial Panel probing alleged killings of #EndSARS protesters at the Lekki toll gate on October 20, 2020.

The organisers explained that they are undaunted by threats by security operatives and counter-protesters under the aegis of #DefendLagos.

“After commiting genocide by killing scores of people who were peacefully protesting at Lekki Tollgate and other parts of Lagos, Governor Sanwo-Olu and other oppressors wants to spit on the dead and dance on the blood of the innocent by reopening the yahoo gate to be collecting their blood money as again.

“We say NO! We are undaunted! We will be occupying Lekki Toll gate again starting from Saturday February 13.
We urge all well meaning Nigerians to storm back all the barricades as our rulers have shown that they can never change.
Since the #EndSARS, they are yet to effect any of the promises. Police brutality is still raging and SARS is still operating.”

“Despite overwhelming and highly compelling evidence showing how several protesters were shot by the military, no single military personnel has been brought to book.

“Deaths have been established and many victims of the Lekki shootings have surfaced, yet neither the victims or families of our deceased colleagues have gotten justice.

“After close to five months of sitting, the judicial panel meant to inquire into the Lekki massacre has refused to deliver justice to victims of the Lekki massacre most of whom have either lost their limbs due to gun wounds or have become deceased.

“Despite overwhelming grounds of involvement of Governor Sanwoolu and ex-army chief, Buratai in the Lekki Massacre, neither of them have been brought to book.
President Buhari instead appointed them ambassadors so they won’t be arrested and prosecuted for genocide and war crimes at the Hague.

Despite EndSARS, Police brutality and extrajudicial killings continue unabated.

“Government has refused to provide employment for young people, yet they went ahead to ban the most promising source of income of young people; cryptocurrency.

“Nigerians are extremely poorer and yet the cost of food is on the high side with increased cost of electricity that only produces darkness. Petrol price is being increased as marketers want it at #190 per litre.

“Nigerians are no longer secured in any part of the country; when they are not being harassed or extrajudicially murdered by police, they are being kidnapped, mimed and killed by bandits.

“Today, the life of cows has become more valuable than those of Nigerians even as our streets and communities have fallen to the rule of kidnappers and bandits.

The Nigerian government now negotiates and enriches terrorists and bandits while chasing after, arresting, shooting and killing protesters.

“It is to this end that we call on you all to come out enmasse to demand not just justice for victims and fallen heroes of the October 20 killings but that all involved in this heinous criminality be brought to book. Come out to demand the right to life and to exist in a country that respects our rights as citizens, abhors police brutality/extrajudicial killings, provides us with security, decent jobs with good wages and other such socio-economic rights that come with being a citizen.”

Daily Devotional 11th of February 2021: Adultery in the heart

BIBLE READING: MATTHEW 5: 27-32

  1. ” You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’
  2. “But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
  3. “If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast [it] from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.
  4. “And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and cast [it] from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.
  5. ” Furthermore it has been said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.’
  6. “But I say to you that whoever divorces his wife for any reason except sexual immorality causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a woman who is divorced commits adultery. MESSAGE:
Jesus taught a deeper truth than what was known: He redefined fornication and adultery. Ordinarily, each of the two involves physical contact but Jesus made his listeners to understand that if you look at a woman lustfully, you have already committed adultery with her in your heart. All sins are first manufactured in the heart before execution. So, thinking about adultery is equivalent to carrying it out. Do not allow adultery in the heart to graduate to a physical one. Sexual sin is done with the body (1 Cor. 6:18).

When someone thinks deeply about any issue, he can carry it out if he has the opportunity. This includes adultery. Many men and women must have committed adultery in their hearts. How shocked your partner could be if they have the opportunity to see what is in your heart. Some men abandon their wives they swore in the church to stick to and look for other men’s wives and widows. Same goes for some women. These things start with unchecked lust in the heart. Proverbs 4:23 advises thus, “Keep your heart with all diligence. For out of it spring the issues of life. “Consciously watch the thoughts of your heart only a surrendered heart can be free from sin. Have you surrendered your heart to Jesus? If you have not, please do so now.

PRAYER:
May You help me dear Lord to check my thoughts so they don’t turn into action.

Daily Devotional 10th of February 2021: Let your passion return.

“Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works…” Revelation 2:5 (KJV)

I remember when we were growing up and our ministry was starting. Every group was actively on fire. When you come to church, you will be hearing prayer from every corner. From children to adults, everyone was involved in spiritual activity. There was spiritual fire all over the place. I remember the young men of those days, many of whom are occupying powerful positions in society today. But they looked like nothing in those days; all they knew was to pray. There was so much passion for the things of God!

But today, even to be in church on time is a problem. Some people are not really sure whether they want to be in church at all; they would rather check online. Frankly, there is an anointing you can never receive online. There is a place of our gathering in our spiritual walk with God; except when government regulations do not permit church gatherings.

Why would anyone want to follow you to church when there is nothing enthusiastic about you? People are looking for something real. When they look at you and do not see how passionate you are about the God you profess to them, they may not want to serve that God because they don’t see Him in you. What are you showing the world that will make them want to follow you? The whole world is in a cup of trembling. Things are turning upside down. The only hope is Jesus. How can you stay from January to December, and there isn’t one person that you led to Jesus or that your life influenced? Do you really believe in this heaven? That if someone dies without Christ, he or she has gone to eternal damnation? Or, do you think it is a theory? If you believe it, you will cast them out of fire with every zeal that you have.

Don’t sabotage your own future by yourself. Let your zeal and fire return! Your life is Christ! You can never catch Christ without passion.

Daily Devotional 9th of Febuary 2021: Fulfilling the law.

BIBLE READING: MATTHEW 5: 17-20

  1. ” Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill.
  2. “For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled.
  3. “Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches [them,] he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
  4. “For I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds [the righteousness] of the scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven. MESSAGE:
Jesus stated clearly that He did not come to abolish the Law and the Prophets but to fulfil them. During the Transfiguration of Jesus in Matthew 17, Moses represented the Law while Elijah represented the Prophets. God showed that power had changed hands when He declared at the mount, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear Him ” (Matt. 17:5). Hebrew 1:1-2 states that God in the olden times spoke through the prophets but now He has spoken through His Son, Jesus Christ. So, Jesus is the embodiment of the Law and the Prophets. He fulfilled both the Law and the Prophets: there is no controversy on that.

It is not easy keeping the Law. The Scripture states in James 2:10 that if one keeps all the laws and fails in one, he has failed in all. If it was easy to keep the Law, Jesus would not have come. The Law came through Moses but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ (John 1:17). When one accepts Jesus as Lord and personal Saviour. Jesus helps him fulfil the Law. Whoever has Jesus does not need struggle with keeping the Law. Jesus energises him and gives him the grace to fulfil the Law. Are you still struggling with keeping the Law? Jesus is here to your rescue. Invite Him today!

PRAYER:
Oh Lord, us You fulfilled the Law, may You help me to also do the same. Amen

Herdsmen attacks: Obaseki embarks on fact-finding tour, vows not to politicise security issues in Edo

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki said his administration will not politicise security issues in the state, noting that efforts are being taken to isolate and deal with the issues as they emerge so as to provide lasting security to communities across the state.

The governor made the remark when he led heads of security agencies in the state on a fact-finding visit to Udo, Ovia South West Local Government Area of the state.

At the Palace of the Iyase of Udo, His Royal Highness (HRH) Patrick Igbinidu, Obaseki said, “We are on a fact-finding tour around some parts of the state today to access the security situation particularly as it relates to farmers and herders’ conflicts in the state.

“As a government, we do not believe that we should politicise security. It is important that we get the facts right and understand what exactly is going on. We had reports about the crisis or impending crisis around this axis.

“We have also had all sorts of anxieties. Well, I will call them speculations on social media about herdsmen being pushed off from neighboring states into this area and the escalating crisis or impending crisis.”

He added, “We have had situations that have resulted in conflicts between herders and farmers. Our position is that we have to manage this crisis carefully. Like I said, we should not politicise the issues of herdsmen in our society.

“We do not accept the situation whereby anybody will be herding cattle with AK-47 rifles and other dangerous weapons. We also understand that there are bandits and criminals who pretend to be herders but undertake criminal activities such as kidnapping in the name and guise of being herdsmen.

“I have always argued that we should separate these people and deal with each one accordingly. Today, we are here to undertake assessments ourselves and to assure the people of Ovia South West of adequate security being provided by the government to protect the people.”

He continued: “The state government is providing adequate security to protect the lives and property of the people. The security structure of the state has been rigid and revamped.

“We will not also accept the situation where people want to use the current security challenges to destabilise our country. We have no other country. Every country has its own challenges but they look for ways to resolve these challenges.

“We have major security challenges in the country as well as the whole of the Sahara region. I think leadership in this country should be responsible and ensure that we focus on the specific crisis, some of which is not anybody’s doing.”

According to the governor, “Some of the crisis we have in the sub-continent today has to do with environmental changes. We should all come together and look for ways to confront these emerging security problems and not to begin to take it out of context because of cheap political gains to create crisis in the country.”

Earlier, the Iyase of Udo, HRH Patrick Igbinidu, said that the security challenges in his community have been on for a very long time, adding, “Farmers always complain about the activities of the herdsmen. When I received such reports, I had to call both parties to resolve the issues immediately. We have been on it for a very long time.”
At a town hall meeting, Obaseki assured the people that his administration would protect residents in the state as he is governor for all.

He urged “the Fulani Community should collaborate with the government and security agencies to fish out criminals. We will create an area where the cattle will go regularly to eat, as they must not go to peoples’ farms. This will stop cattle from moving round the community including in farmlands.”

The State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Philip Agbadu, assured of the readiness of his men in ensuring peace in the troubled areas in the state, noting, “I urge Fulani leaders to ensure that children are not allowed to follow the cattle for grazing as they may not be able to control them.”

In his remarks, the leader of Fulani Community in the area, Alhaji Muhammad Buhari expressed appreciation to the governor for the fact-finding mission to the area, adding that Fulani community in the area are peace-loving people and has lived in the community for years and his people will always support peaceful atmosphere.

Oritse Femi finally reacts to infidelity allegations

Nigerian singer, Oritse Femi, has reacted to speculations that he sleeps with strange women in his matrimonial home. The rumour began when his wife, Nabila Fash, took to her social media account claiming that a woman comes into her house to sleep with her husband whenever she goes to work.

She wrote on Twitter, “Whoever the imbecile is that came to my house while I was away at work you need to identify yourself. It was shocking news when you posted it a few months back, but now I can confirm. On a Monday morning, when people are out to look for daily bread some people, it is sex that is their problem.”

The singer’s wife further went to her Instagram story to vent. She wrote, “Women it is not wrong to love! It is not wrong to give a second chance! It is not wrong to want to protect your home/marriage! What is wrong is to continue to be a fool and not know your worth,” she wrote.

Shortly after she made the post, tongues began waging as many people insinuated that she was accusing her husband of infidelity.

However, Oritse Femi stated that his wife’s posts are not about him. He denied cheating on his wife and bringing strange women to his matrimonial home.

He further said that his marriage is intact. “I have seen all the news reports about me online and I do not understand what it is all about. My wife went online to write something but they were not about me. I do not bring women to my matrimonial home. The write up that my wife posted was not about me. It was about my friend, my very close friend that came in from London. He stays with me and she is upset that I allow my friend to bring women to our house.

“I have explained to her that he is my very good friend and he accommodated me anytime I travel out of the country. It is not really an issue. Because of this same issue, I had to ask my friend to leave. In fact, I also had to chase all the boys leaving with me even though they know nothing about this incident. I do not cheat on my wife. My wife and I do not have an issue, everything is cool at home; in fact, she left for work not so long ago,” the singer said.
