Don’t retaliate’ — MURIC appeals to northerners over Abia killings

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has appealed to northerners not to avenge the killing of some northern traders in Abia state.

Ishaq Akintola, director of MURIC, said the appeal was for peace in Nigeria.

TheCable had reported how several persons were killed by gunmen who attacked the new cattle market in Omumauzor community in Ukwa west LGA of the state.

In a statement on Wednesday, Akintola said nobody has the right to take the life of another, adding that the attack in Abia was intended to provoke northerners into a reprisal.

“About fifteen (15) Northern traders and 150 cows belonging to the victims were killed in Abia State last week,” Akintola said.

“Although we are aware that this is not the first time such dastardly act would occur in South Eastern Nigeria, we strongly appeal to Northerners not to contemplate retaliation. Our main reason for the appeal is the need for peace in the country at this point in time when we are approaching the end of the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.

“MURIC strongly condemns the killings which occurred in Abia last week. Indeed, we condemn all killings and all criminal acts, whether perpetrated by herders, ethnic militia or separatists. Life is sacred and no homo sapien has the right to unlawfully take the life of another.

“We charge Northerners to remain patient and law-abiding. This attack in Abia in particular was intended to provoke the North into counter-killings which may spiral into another orgy of violence culminating in a civil war. The North should not even bite the bait, talk less of swallowing it. The cost is too high.”

Akintola commended northerners for exercising patience.

“The North has held back its anger each time its people are killed, harassed and intimidated by Southerners. Our records show that this has occurred several times particularly in the last seven years without the North attempting to retaliate once. We salute both the Northern youths and elders and urge them to hold on and continue the display of maturity and reticence,” he said.

“We mourn all those who lost their lives as a result of killings around the country and we pray that Allah will give their families the fortitude to bear the losses. We also pray for enduring peace, political stability as well as economic prosperity in our dear country, Nigeria.”

2023: We Won’t Allow ‘Peoples Destruction Party’ (PDP) Return To Power, Says El-Rufai

Kaduna State governor, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai has taken a swipe at the main opposition party in Nigeria, The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, saying the APC is committed, by reaching a zoning formula agreement, to ensure the “Peoples’ destruction party” does not return to power.

Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, said contrary to reports in the media of division among the APC governors, the agreement had been reached on the zoning formula.

He said: “We have agreed on a zoning formula for all the six geo-political zones. Essentially, the northern zone will have the positions the south have had in the last eight years. And vice versa.

el-Rufai also said, “We are committed to ensuring that the Peoples, Destruction Party doesn’t come back to power.”

The Bayelsa State Vigilante Service has apprehended a man, Ebere Nwosu for allegedly attempting to abduct three minors along the popular Tombia-Etegwe roundabout axis of the state capital, Yenagoa.

The 49-year-old suspect was apprehended at about 5pm on Monday, February 21, after operatives of the vigilante service closely observed his “unusual” interaction with the minors who were hawking satchet water.

The operatives stationed at Tombia roundabout noticed that the suspect was engaging the minors; Rejoice Efe, 11, and Success Obaru; 12, from Delta State, conversation and making several phone calls to an unknown person.

The Chairman Vigilante Service, Hon. Doubiye Alagba, who confirmed the development, said the suspect was observed by the men of the vigilante group stationed at the Tombia-etegwe roundabout area.

He said that after several minutes of observation from a distance, one of his men approached the suspect to ask what he wanted with the children.

“Our men observed how the suspect had kept the three minors busy for several minutes and wondered what he was upto, it was at the point of his several calls and serious discussion with the three minors that we quickly asked one of our men to approach him,” the chairman stated.

“When he was approached by our member he immediately took to his heel and and caught after a hot chase.

“At first the suspect claimed to have been a native of Rivers State, but after series of investigation, he later confessed his real identity that he is from Imo State.”

According to one of the children, Rejoice Efe, the suspect had called them in guise of buying sachet water.

“We were hawking along the road only for this uncle to call us to buy water from us. We ran towards him and opened our bucket waiting for him to buy the pure water, he started making utterances first to my sister and asked me to wait,” she narrated.

Oba of Benin Receives £2.5m Artefacts from Britain, 125 Years After They Were Stolen

There was great jubilation among the royal family and people of Benin Kingdom on Saturday following the official handover of two artefacts: Cockerel and a bronze bust to the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II.
The returned Cockerel is valued at £2million while the Oba’s head is valued and insured for £500,000 pounds.

The two were part of the hundreds of looted artefacts during the British invasion of the kingdom in 1897. This is coming as the African Union (AU) has added its voice to the call on European countries to return Africa’s artefacts in their possession.
The two artefacts were presented on Saturday to the Oba of Benin by the Nigerian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Mr. Sarafa Isola.

Speaking during the presentation, Oba Ewuare II, described the return as the beginning of the restitution of the artefacts that were looted in1897 during the military expedition by the British in Benin Kingdom.
The monarch, who spoke through Prince Aghatise Erediauwa, said: “For us, our bronze does not transcend mere art. They are mostly of religious significance to us and these two bronze pieces will return to where they rightly belong.

“I will reiterate that the bronze and other works that were looted from the palace must be returned back here directly or through the agency of the federal government,” the monarch explained.
While expressing appreciation to President Muhammadu Buhari for expressly directing that the two bronzes be handed to him directly, the Benin monarch also commended both Jesus College of Cambridge University and the University of Aberdeen for their pace-setting initiative in returning these two bronzes. On his part, the Nigerian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Isola, said history was being made as the artifacts were being returned to right the wrongs of the past.
“My assignment here is to directly bring these objects to the Oba of Benin Kingdom. That is the presidential directive.
“Value has been added to these artefacts. I am not aware of the value as at when it was taken away but as at today, the Cockerel is valued at £2million while the Oba’s head is valued and insured for £500,000 pounds. We will still see many of them come back and it is a great treasure for Benin Kingdom and Nigeria.” Ishola also commended the British Government for granting export licenses for the artefacts at no cost to Nigeria, hoping that more of the looted artworks would be returned.
Also speaking, Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State, represented by his Chief of Staff, Osaigbovo Iyoha, pledged to support the palace in the return of the artefacts.
He said any institution willing to return the artefacts should liaise with the palace.
Earlier, the Director General, National Commission for Museums and Monuments (NCMM), Prof Abba Isa Tijani, said history had started to take its proper shape during the reign of Oba Ewuare II, as the looted artefacts have started coming to their place of origin.
According to him, these artefacts are living arts, artefacts of the Benin people.
“They are not produced for the sake of money, aesthetics but part of their history, culture and daily life,” he added.Meanwhile, AU has added its voice to the call on European countries to return Africa’s artefacts in their possession.
President of AU, Mr. Macky Sall, made this known during his speech at the ongoing EU-AU summit in Brussels.
He said the restitution of African works would remain a matter of high priority, insisting that they were part of Africa’s ‘civilisational identity’.
“If we want to build a new Europe-Africa relational ethic, based on respect and recognition of historical facts, we must pursue the work already started through the recommendations of the Savoy-Sarr report,” Sall explained.
His position was part of the eight proposals by African leaders as their contribution to the new partnership with Europe.
As colonial masters ‘conquered’ Africa, thousands of its cultural artefacts were stolen. The conquerors took Africans as slaves to work on plantations and to build their countries while the artefacts were displayed in museums.
For instance, in 1897, the British launched a punitive expedition against Benin, in response to an attack on a British diplomatic expedition.
Apart from bronze sculptures and plaques, innumerable royal objects were taken as a result of the mission and these are scattered all over the world.
While restitution has begun, Sall’s call has reinforced the stance of the African people on the ruins of colonialism and the clamour for the return of their stolen heritage.
Sall also called for a revision of the investment risk evaluation criteria in Africa, noting that, “the risk perception remains considerably higher than the real risk, which results in high insurance costs, penalises investment and reduces competitiveness of our economies.”

Hold Your Heads High: Aregbesola Tells APC Members as Oyetola Says “I am Choice of God”

Hold Your Heads High; Aregbesola Tells APC Members as Oyetola Says “I am Choice of God”

Aftermath of Saturday’s governorship election, incumbent Governor Gboyega Oyetola and former Governor Rauf Aregbesola have opened up.
While Oyetola said he is the choice of God and those against him are working in vain, Aregbesola has told a faction of the party to hold their heads high in spite of the out come of the governorship primaries that took place.
While the Oyetola camp rated the exercise as credible and fair, the Aregbesola camp, whose candidate, Moshood Adeoti came second in the race, alleged massive irregularities.
Chairman of the faction of the APC, Rasak Salinsile, had alleged on Saturday that the names of members of the party opposed to Oyetola were deleted from the party registers used for the exercise.
Many videos had surfaced on Saturday how where many members displayed their membership slips at polling centres but could not find their names.
A statement on behalf of the Minister of Interior, said reports of what he called “shenanigans of the officials who conducted the sham of an election” had reached him.
He said, “We have been inundated with reports state-wide of how your names were expunged from the party’s voters register, which was not made available until this morning, contrary to the convention of making the list available to the candidates before the election.

“We have heard of how party registration cards were being hawked this morning to the supporters of the state governor.

“We have also received reports of how accreditation was not done at all in many wards and how people without the party identification just participated and queued behind the governor in many polling units.

“We have received the report from our members and independent observers, how government officials and notable supporters of the governor officiated in the election, how votes were farcically counted in favour of the governor and how the votes recorded for him were more than the number of voters accredited ab initio in many units.

“We have heard of the absence of result sheets and other vital documents for recording results and vital data. We note also the absenc
