Nurses in Ogun embark on strike over kidnap of members

The National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), Ogun council, has embarked on strike over the kidnapping of its members and insecurity in the state.

According to NAN, in a statement signed by Roseline Solarin, NANNM chairman, and Oladayo Ogunlaja, the state Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) chairman, the association said the strike took effect from midnight, April 13.

While mentioning recent incidents, the statement said the kidnapping of health workers is disheartening and unacceptable.

It added that the state government’s approach of not negotiating with the alleged kidnappers had made them believe that their lives and property were of no essence to the government.

The association also accused the state of not showing any commitment that could facilitate the early release of their members.

“The recent kidnapping of health workers after rendering their services to the good citizens of Ogun is so disheartening, repugnant and unacceptable,” the statement said.

“Recall that Dr Oladunni Adetola and Mrs Bamgbose, a nurse, were precisely abducted on the 7th of April, making it six days in incarceration.

“Also, another dental therapist working at the General Hospital, Ijebu-Igbo, was abducted today on her way to work.

“In the light of these, there is immediate withdrawal of services of our members from all institutions in Ogun until the safety of our members is guaranteed.”

On Saturday, the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) called off their nationwide strike after 10 days.

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has suspended its strike which commenced on April 1.

Uyilawa Okhuaihesuyi, president of the association, confirmed the development to TheCable on Saturday.

The decision to suspend the strike comes after the signing of a new agreement with the federal government, concerning issues raised in NARD’s 13-point demand.

At a meeting which lasted hours and stretched into the late hours of Friday, the federal government had promised to address the issues raised by the doctors, including salary arrears and owed allowances.

Chris Ngige, minister of labour and employment, had said on Saturday in Abuja that a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) was signed after a conciliatory meeting between representatives of the federal government and those of NARD.

Speaking with journalists after the meeting, Ngige said the federal government has set up a committee to look into the issue of irregular payment, adding that the panel will revert within the next 72 hours.

“A five-man committee has been set up, comprising of the government agencies concerned — federal ministry of health chairing — representatives of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, accountant-general’s office, NMA, Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors, and the chairman of the committee of CMDs,” the minister said.

“They’re to work and smoothen rough edges as those affected in the irregularities we mentioned, which is the issue of double payments in some cases. So, they have to manage the situation and regularise. There are issues of some still omitted.

“We gave them 72 hours to meet from tomorrow and give us a clean, authenticated list, so that even in the subsequent months, we won’t have all these hiccups anymore.”

The doctors’ strike has paralysed activities across public hospitals in the country, leading relatives to relocate patients from affected facilities.

Why IBB annulled June 12 election, by Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Sunday attributed annulment of June 12, 1993, presidential election presumably won by late philanthropist, Moshood Kashimawo Abiola by former Military President General Ibrahim Babangida on “bad belle.”

Obasanjo said the annulment robbed Egbaland and Ogun State the rare privilege of having three of its prominent sons occupying the number one seat at different times.

The elder statesman, who was referring to former Head of Interim National Government(ING), Chief Ernest Shonekan, himself who was first a military Head of States and elected President, apparently noted that Abiola would have become the third if the 1993 poll was not annulled.

He spoke on Sunday in Abeokuta, the Ogun State shortly after his investiture as a trustee of the Abeokuta Club, a sociocultural organisation of Egba people of Ogun State.

Obasanjo was honoured alongside MKO Abiola who was awarded a posthumous vice-patron of the club.

The former President, who recalled Abiola was his schoolmate at the Baptist Boys High School (BBHS) Abeokuta, said the late politician richly deserved the award bestowed on him by the Abeokuta club.

Obasanjo said: “When Abeokuta Club was in the process of being birthed, things in Abeokuta were not as rosy as they are today. And the sons of Abeokuta who were in Lagos put their heads together in late Chief Sobo Sowemimo’s house to think of what they could do to improve the development of Abeokuta as a city. I pay tributes to all those founding members, those who have departed this world and those who are still here.

“I want to thank the club for this honour being bestowed on me and the honour being bestowed on my school mate MKO Abiola which he richly deserved.

“Kabiyesi, the Alake (of Egbaland) alluded to it. Normally when you win a cup three times, you keep that cup. Isn’t it? If not for bad belle, Abeokuta would have produced President of Nigeria three times, in which case we should have kept it permanently.

“But be that as it may, we have a great heritage. And we should be proud of our heritage. On this note, I will say on this occasion, I thank the President, the patron and grand patron, members of the Board of Trustees, the executive; I want to say this, I will continue to contribute my quota to the development and growth of this club and by extension, the development and growth of Abeokuta, of Ogun State, of Nigeria, of African and indeed the of the world in whichever way I could.”

Obasanjo pledged his continuous commitment to the development of the club, Ogun state, Nigeria and the world.

Alake of Egbaland Oba Adedotun Gbadebo while presenting the plague to Obasanjo, described Obasanjo and MKO Abiola as proud sons of Abeokuta, adding some “bad blood” didn’t allow Abiola to emerge President.
