Herdsmen attacks: Obaseki embarks on fact-finding tour, vows not to politicise security issues in Edo

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki said his administration will not politicise security issues in the state, noting that efforts are being taken to isolate and deal with the issues as they emerge so as to provide lasting security to communities across the state.

The governor made the remark when he led heads of security agencies in the state on a fact-finding visit to Udo, Ovia South West Local Government Area of the state.

At the Palace of the Iyase of Udo, His Royal Highness (HRH) Patrick Igbinidu, Obaseki said, “We are on a fact-finding tour around some parts of the state today to access the security situation particularly as it relates to farmers and herders’ conflicts in the state.

“As a government, we do not believe that we should politicise security. It is important that we get the facts right and understand what exactly is going on. We had reports about the crisis or impending crisis around this axis.

“We have also had all sorts of anxieties. Well, I will call them speculations on social media about herdsmen being pushed off from neighboring states into this area and the escalating crisis or impending crisis.”

He added, “We have had situations that have resulted in conflicts between herders and farmers. Our position is that we have to manage this crisis carefully. Like I said, we should not politicise the issues of herdsmen in our society.

“We do not accept the situation whereby anybody will be herding cattle with AK-47 rifles and other dangerous weapons. We also understand that there are bandits and criminals who pretend to be herders but undertake criminal activities such as kidnapping in the name and guise of being herdsmen.

“I have always argued that we should separate these people and deal with each one accordingly. Today, we are here to undertake assessments ourselves and to assure the people of Ovia South West of adequate security being provided by the government to protect the people.”

He continued: “The state government is providing adequate security to protect the lives and property of the people. The security structure of the state has been rigid and revamped.

“We will not also accept the situation where people want to use the current security challenges to destabilise our country. We have no other country. Every country has its own challenges but they look for ways to resolve these challenges.

“We have major security challenges in the country as well as the whole of the Sahara region. I think leadership in this country should be responsible and ensure that we focus on the specific crisis, some of which is not anybody’s doing.”

According to the governor, “Some of the crisis we have in the sub-continent today has to do with environmental changes. We should all come together and look for ways to confront these emerging security problems and not to begin to take it out of context because of cheap political gains to create crisis in the country.”

Earlier, the Iyase of Udo, HRH Patrick Igbinidu, said that the security challenges in his community have been on for a very long time, adding, “Farmers always complain about the activities of the herdsmen. When I received such reports, I had to call both parties to resolve the issues immediately. We have been on it for a very long time.”
At a town hall meeting, Obaseki assured the people that his administration would protect residents in the state as he is governor for all.

He urged “the Fulani Community should collaborate with the government and security agencies to fish out criminals. We will create an area where the cattle will go regularly to eat, as they must not go to peoples’ farms. This will stop cattle from moving round the community including in farmlands.”

The State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Philip Agbadu, assured of the readiness of his men in ensuring peace in the troubled areas in the state, noting, “I urge Fulani leaders to ensure that children are not allowed to follow the cattle for grazing as they may not be able to control them.”

In his remarks, the leader of Fulani Community in the area, Alhaji Muhammad Buhari expressed appreciation to the governor for the fact-finding mission to the area, adding that Fulani community in the area are peace-loving people and has lived in the community for years and his people will always support peaceful atmosphere.

A farmer in Omu-aran kwara state was forced to pay N350k in Omu Aran after cows grazing on his farm were found dead.

farmer was forced to pay N350k in Omu Aran after cows grazing on his farm were found dead.

There are strong indications that herdsmen/farmers crisis is imminent in Omu-Aran Local Government Area of Kwara State as a farmer (name withheld), a septuagenarian, was coerced to pay a group of Fulani herdsmen a sum of N350,000 owing to the death of their cows after grazing on his farmland.

The farmer who brought the case to the foreground narrated to Harmony Times correspondents, on Sunday, that the herdsmen had accused him of poisoning their cows.

The farmer, whose statement was corroborated by his wife, explained that he was working on his farm when a group of herdsmen came to visit him and recounted how their cows had grazed on his farm and were found dead some hours later.

He said “As soon as we got to the farm that very day, my wife came to me that a man wanted to see me. She inquired why he wanted to see me but he insisted on seeing me.

“Shortly after my wife left, they went to meet him at our farm house and they brought her to where I was. When they arrived they told me to come with them and I inquire on the purpose. They were like twenty in number. So, I decided to follow them to where we put our cashew seeds.

“They asked me ‘What did you put here?’ when we got there and they instructed me to dig the ground with my hand. Hesitantly, I dug it and I saw something like ashes. I was questioned on what was in the hole and I responded that I didn’t put anything.

“Thus, they concluded that I put poisonous substance in the cashew and their cows ate it and die. I protested to there claim. They took me to where the remains of their cows are and there is a very long distance between where their cows gave up and my house. Surprisingly, they came with policemen and we were later arrested.

“The following day, the Fulani leaders across suburb communities came to together to discuss about the issue and the resolution, after so many deliberation, was that I should pay a sum of N350,000 in order to avoid being killed in retaliation and I paid part of the money, with the sum of N80,000 left to be paid.”

In his reaction, the Chief Press Secretary to the State Governor, Rafiu Ajakaye, implored the aggrieved to write to the Kwara State Police Command and copy the state government, and expressed optimism that the issue will be resolved after both party are heard.

“Let the aggrieved person write to the Police Command and copy the government. Let him explain his issues. I’m sure they will call the herder to also state their own issue.

“In this herder/farmer issue, I appeal to all of us to please thread softly. Our country is going through a hard time which requires patience, maturity and tact to avoid unpalatable outcome. I beg us to pls be patient. God bless you,” he said.

Meanwhile, Barrister Titilope, the Managing Partner, Akogun Chambers and President, Kwara South Youth Organization had vowed to take the matter up if a petition to the State Police Commissioner is neither responded to nor given utmost and sincere attention.

When the PRO of Omu Aran Development Association was contacted, he said the organization is currently investigating the matter before an official action will be taken.

I accept your apology, I am solidly behind you, Ooni Of Ife to Sunday Igboho

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has accepted the apology tendered by popular Yoruba rights activist, Sunday Adeyemo, aka Sunday Igboho.

Igboho had in virtual meeting tagged: Townhall with Yoruba in Diaspora said the Ooni disappointed the Yoruba people for not telling President Muhammadu Buhari the truth when he met with him.

According to him, “When Ooni met with Buhari over the herdsmen issue, Ooni should have told Buhari the truth but he did not. When Ooni returned, he started tackling me to leave the remaining task to the government to finish. You can imagine that kind of talk?

“Alaafin of Oyo has asked me to meet him over the matter. Alaafin should have been the one invited to meet Buhari but since the Ooni was invited, he should be bold to tell the president the whole truth and make the demands of the Yoruba people known to the president.

“The Ooni disappointed himself. Some politicians are behind Ooni’s latest move. He invited me to his palace but I refused to go. I would have gone if he had represented us well but he did not. I won’t honour any monarch who does not cooperate with me. Enough is enough, the Fulani have done enough.”

However, on Wednesday evening Igboho apologized and noted that he made those remarks, about the first-class king, in the heat of the moment.

In the same vein, Director of Media and Public Affairs, Ooni’s palace, Mr Moses Olafare, confirmed that Igboho has been forgiven.

He said: “He (Ooni) has forgiven him as he had tendered an apology via a video clip he produced via social media yesterday evening.

“Before tendering the apology, it was the Olugbon of Ile-igbon that first called and informed Arole Oodua on the phone that he had scolded Sunday on phone on his misdeeds and that, he would soon tender an apology to him on the matter. Sunday Igboho later released a video in which he tendered the apology.

“Even though the way and manner, Sunday behaved was sacrilege to the Oduduwa throne but he has already apologised and I can confirm that Arole Oodua forgiven him, because, there is no perfection in humanity. Sunday is a human being like a normal human being who could misbehave as well”.

He went on: “As the father of all, the Arole Oduduwa Olofin Adimula, Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi Ojaja II remains his father who had even identified with him in the past two weeks he has begun with the struggle and he is still solidly behind him for the liberation of the Yorubas from criminal herdsmen who have adamantly terrorised our land.”

What I told Sunday Igboho. –Pastor Tunde Bakare.

“Immediately Sunday Igboho gave that ultimatum, I knew there was trouble if nothing was done immediately. And he carried out what he said he would carry out.

“What did I do? As an individual, I found a way of reaching out to him (Igboho). I have never met him before, never spoken to him before but I reached out to him and after a while, he called me and I said, I appeal to you by the mercies of God, two wrongs cannot make a right, you have proved your point, let us find alternative solution so that there would be no bloodbath.

“He promised to come and see me in Lagos and I had made preparations for him to come but unfortunately, his father took ill and he had to take him to the hospital.

“I followed also to ensure I prayed for the father. I told him, I am not saying you are right or you are wrong, that is not the issue but please, if you carry out this threat, it would lead to something bigger than you and you do not want to go down in history as someone who had good intention of defending the rights of his people but ended up bringing them a bloodbath.

“He thanked me and then he said he would find time to come to Lagos.”

“if care was not taken, there could be 10,000 Sunday Igbohos in the country, tasked security agencies to bring all perpetrators of killing, kidnapping and rape cases in Ibarapaland to book.

“Let us not throw legal semantics with this issue. When people are being slaughtered and being killed and this man is reeling out the names of those who are killed and nobody has disproved that they were truly killed, whoever killed those people if they are not brought to book, then, you cannot be asking a man who is saying I want justice to say he is wrong.

“Two wrongs don’t make a right, I am not asking him to go kill anybody, I’m not asking him to take laws into his hands but I am saying would you say that those who are killed should just die for nothing?

Where were the police and security agencies when those people were being killed? If their killers were not brought to book, we could have more than 10,000 Sunday Igbohos in one day if care is not taken.”

Biafra: It Is Clear Now, Nnamdi Kanu Is The True Leader Of Ndi-Igbo, Not Ohaneze Organisation – Prof. Usman Yusuf

Nigerian Professor Usman Yusuf has revealed that the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is indeed the true leader of the Igbo Nation and not the Ohaneze Ndi-Igbo organisation.

The professor described Kanu as the true leader who is the Commander in Chief in southeastern Nigeria. “I have seen several Igbo men claiming leadership, but Nnamdi Kanu is different from most of them”. “He is focused, strategic in planning and has commanded a humongous number of followers across Nigeria and the globe whose loyalty is unquestionable,” he revealed.

“Nnamdi Kanu from the United Kingdom, gives an order to the youths and they are all obeying him, that is leadership, he said.

He further stated that “ it’s a shame that Nnamdi Kanu is the one calling the shot in the Southeast.” He blamed the other Igbo leaders for the squalor in the region and asked, “Where are the leaders, where are the Ohanaeze leaders?

Where are the elders who should call the youths to order when they misbehave? ” Nnamdi Kanu is the only leader the youths can trust.

The government should listen to him when he talks, It is clear now, Nnamdi Kanu is a true leader of Ndi-Igbo, Not Ohaneze Organisation he said.

Open Grazing should stop in all the Eastern Region, IPOB Leader Kanu gave Governors 14 days ultimatum.

We wish to humbly and most submissively call upon all the governors of the East, to as a matter of urgency, ban all manner of open grazing in the region in compliance with the 1969 statutory law of #Nigeria that banned such provocative and primitive practice by Fulani herdsmen.

The bold step taken by Yoruba governors in banning open grazing in their region is commendable and as such MUST be reciprocated and consolidated by a similar pronouncement in the East.

If after 14 days there is no firm and decisive action by Eastern governors to ban open grazing in our land, #ESN will step into the breach to commence the enforcement of this 1969 Anti-Grazing Law across the entire region. Don’t say you were not informed or given prior warning.
