Get well soon Abba Kyari- Femi Fani-Kayode

I just confirmed that my old friend and brother Mallam Abba Kyari, Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari, has tested positive to Covid 19. This is sad news.

Abba was my colleague at Cambridge University in the mid-1980’s and he was a partner in my father’s law firm, Fani-Kayode and Sowemimo, for many years.

I sincerely and honestly wish him well and pray for a quick recovery for him just as I do for all other Nigerians that have tested positive, including Vice President Abubakar Atiku’s son.

May God deliver our nation and our people from this evil scourge- Femi Fani-Kayode

New deadly virus, Hantavirus, re-emerges in China, kills one

As the world is battling Coronavirus which originated in Wuhan, China, another deadly virus called Hantavirus has re-emerged in the Asian country killing one man in Yunnan Province.

According to Global Times, the man died while on his way back to Shandong Province for work on a chartered bus on Monday.

The paper said the deceased was tested positive for hantavirus, adding that other 32 travellers on the bus were tested.

Hantavirus has been in existent for years and it causes severe respiratory disease. According to the Centre for Disease Control (CDC), the symptoms of Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome are fatigue, fever and muscle aches, especially in the large muscle groups.

Others are cough and shortness of breath, with the sensation of a tight band around the chest as the lungs fill with fluid.

About 38 out of 100 cases lead to death.
Hantaviruses are found in rodents. Humans get infected when they breathe aerosolised virus shed from the excreta, urine and droppings of rodents.

Human to human transmission is rare and was reported in 2009 and 2015.
“In Chile and Argentina, rare cases of person-to-person transmission have occurred among close contacts of a person who was ill with a type of hantavirus called Andes virus,” the CDC reports.

The Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome has no specific cure just like the Coronavirus. But if patients are diagnosed early, they are treated symptomatically in the Intensive Care Unit.

Coronavirus: Atiku Abubakar Writes Nigerians

With the Nigerian spirit, we can overcome any challenge. The news that Nigeria last week discharged the Italian index case of Corona Virus in the country after testing negative for the disease is yet another confirmation that the Nigerian spirit can overcome any tough challenge.

Atiku Abubakar

It is a thing of pride to us as country that our health professionals not only promptly rose to the challenge by tracking the trail of the case and subsequent ones, but are able to fully treat the Italian index case and one other.

I will like to congratulate and commend all relevant stakeholders in our healthcare system, at the states and federal government for a job well done thus far. I wish to make special mention of the young doctor, Dr. Amarachukwu Karen Allison, whose vigilance may have averted an escalation of the disease.

This singular effort will, no doubt, boost the respect that our country will earn from the international community and even more is the honour it would bring to Nigerian medical professionals.

Those men and women who stand in the frontline of containing the spread of the virus within our shores are heros and history would be kind to them. They have shown to the world that Nigeria is a great country, with great, committed and hardworking people.

Coronavirus

We should continue to be sensitive to the potential dangers inherent in the virus which causes the Covid-19 disease by adhering to instructions about social distancing, washing our hands frequently under running water with soap and ensuring that we limit exposure to large gatherings.

I join millions of other Nigerians to celebrate our health workers for their courageous work at this difficult time and I urge all Nigerians to remain strong while we fight the scourge of this virus to the end.
