Eight Nigerians held captive by Chinese at the federal capital territory Abuja

Two Chinese nationals were arrested and paraded by the Police in Abuja today for locking up their eight Nigerian staff in an apartment for the past four months.

According to International Centre for Investigative Reporting (ICIR), a team of six police officers from the FCT Divisional Police Command in Utako swung into action, following a tip-off by a radio listener who called in during the “Berekete Family” programme of the Human Rights Nigeria and raided the residence of the Chinese nationals at No. 117 Jabi area, Abuja.

At the time of this report, it’s still unclear the kind of services the eight Nigerians rendered to the Chinese couple. However, it is apparent they were domestic staff of the couple.

One of the women among the eight rescued Nigerians said they were not allowed to move out of the mansion. She complained that the couple refused allowing her to go for treatment even when she was very sick. She added that if any of them goes out, a certain percentage of their salary would be deducted.

Another man among the group who gave his name as Alex said he worked as a driver for the Chinese couple. He added that he and the seven others have been working as domestic staff of the Chinese couples since the outbreak of Covid-19 in February.

Another worker who did not reveal his name said that 3000 was deducted from his salary because he stubbornly went out to fill his pension form.

All the staff agreed that they were not given food by the Chinese nationals aside their salaries.

ICIR observed that during the arrest, only two Chinese were arrested although there were four of them sighted in the house.

The Chinese couple were calling a particular person as they first refused going with the policemen. However, they succumbed as the person over the phone instructed them to go with the policemen.

Recall that six days ago, the Nigerian Police in Kano State had rescued more than 109 workers who were locked in.

Lagos state contrsctors paid street sweepers five thousand naira out of 25thousand naira approved

Ibrahim Odumboni, acting managing director of the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), has alleged that some contractors were involved in sharp practices.

According to the Nigerian Tribune, Odumboni said the government approved N25,000 for each sweeper in the state, but the contractors shortchanged them and paid as low as N5,000.

He said an audit embarked upon by the state showed that some of the contractors padded their bills with ghost sweepers and supervisors.

“Our operation is such that we delineate the twenty councils and thirty-seven development areas in Lagos into routes. These routes are, in turn, contracted out to mangers or contractors if you like. They are the ones who hire the sweepers and the supervisors directly,” he said.

“Our own role is to pay them and carry out oversight to ensure services we pay for are rendered. In this particular instance, what happened was that reports reaching us indicated that the contractors were not meeting their obligations to those they hired.

“Aside that, at our end, we discovered that the bills being submitted by the contractors were shooting up as the months rolled by. I think Mr Governor was not happy with the situation. I was asked to take over in May. By the time I took over, only two months were being owed the contractors contrary to the stories being peddled around that the government was owing six months or so.

“Of course, the audit carried out revealed a lot of things. We found out that a good number of the contractors were involved in sharp practices by padding up their bills with ghost sweepers and supervisors. Worse still, they were underpaying them. Some contractors were paying the hardworking sweepers N5,000, N12,000, N15,000, N18,500 monthly whilst the state approves N25,000 for each sweeper and N40,000 for supervisor. That has vindicated Mr Governor.”

Odubomi said Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the governor of the state, has been vindicated.

He said the state would work on putting an end to the situation and ensure that scarce resources are put to use.

Street sweepers in the state have carried out demonstrations to protest owed salaries.

This is wickedness of the highest order from the contractors. May the Lord judge them all

Government of Lagos State working to establish radio station solely dedicate to Education

The Lagos State Government on Monday said plans are underway to establish a Radio Station solely dedicated to education of pupils and students in the State.

This, according to the Commissioner for Education, Mrs Folasade Adefisayo, will go a long way to ensure sustainable access to educational contents by students in view of the challenges thrown up by Covid-19 pandemic.

Adefisayo disclosed this at Lagos House, Marina during the official presentation of 5,000 transistor radios by Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials (COWLSO) in partnership with the Office of Lagos State First Lady, Dr Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu to the Ministry of Education.

The radios are to be distributed to pupils and students across the State, especially in the hard-to-reach areas to ensure access to programmes already dedicated to education on some radio stations.

This presentation is part of efforts to ensure that no child is left behind in the access to quality education in Lagos State on account of Corona Virus and other challenges which have brought about temporary closure of schools.

Horror: Man stabs self and wife to death over child paternity at Lekki Nigeria

Nigerian man stabs his wife to death and then commits suicide in their home in Lekki

A Nigerian man simply identified as Femi, stabbed his wife to death, and thereafter committed suicide in their home in Victory Park estate in Lagos state on Sunday, June 21.

According to residents of the estate, the couple moved into the estate three weeks ago with their two young children. Not much was known about the couple but just a day before the murder-suicide, they were spotted jogging together on Saturday night June 20.

However, on Sunday, the man who is said to have always questioned the paternity of their second child, stabbed his wife to death, and then took his own life.

A neighbor who spoke on condition of anonymity to LIB, said

On Sunday afternoon, neighbors close to the couple’s apartment heard loud music emanating from their home and this lasted for many hours.

The neighbors went to the estate office to complain about the loud music and insisted the estate officials go there and caution the couple.

The estate authorities went to the couple’s compound to appeal to them to turn down the volume of the music coming from their apartment.

They however met with the wife’s sister who was downstairs with the couple’s children. The sister immediately went upstairs so she can inform her sister and the husband about the complaint laid by the estate authorities. She knocked several times but got no response.

After waiting for so long, the sister and the estate officials decided to pull the door down. They were greeted by a horrific sight.

Apparently, the man had killed his wife. It is believed it was pre-meditated because when they got into the room, they saw different kinds of knives there. The woman’s legs and hands were bound and her mouth shut with a cellotape. The husband used a clipper to shave her hair, stabbed her head, her eyes, stabbed her multiple times with different knives.

The scene was nothing short of a horror movie.

After stabbing his wife to death, the man committed suicide by drinking sniper”

Spokesperson of the state police command, Bala Elkana who confirmed the incident to LIB, said

It is true. Homicide detectives have sealed up the place. They have commenced investigation. The corpse of the man and the woman have been moved to the hospital for an autopsy.

Two kitchen knives were found there and two bottles of Sniper. The woman had injuries from stabbing while foams were coming out of the man’s mouth who is suspected to have taken those Snipers.

Investigation is ongoing”
